have you read american gods by neil gaiman? the main character is spoken to by one of the new techno gods through the characters of a tv show. i'm currently so glad i have no cable.
i believe it's called catharsis. they want you to feel things you wouldn't normally feel. that or they feed off of the tears of mortals. i'm not sure which.
